Lumachelle marbl…
Description

PAIR OF MARBLE CONSOLES Italy or Germany (?), 18th century Lumachelle marble; chased and gilt bronze H. 94.5 cm, W. 72 cm, D. 39.5 cm These very rare marble wall brackets with gilt bronze decoration probably came as a continuation of a fireplace. The search for harmony and splendor in the decorative arts in the Grand Siècle leads us to Versailles and the Trianon. In imitation of the King, the courtiers had their Parisian residences decorated and furnished with colored marble; they placed large console tables entirely in marble, matching the fireplace, in the reception rooms. The other European courts were not to be outdone. Here, their unique feet are highlighted by moving falls, animated by acanthus leaves, water leaves and oak leaves. The quality of the chasing of the gilded bronzes goes hand in hand with the quality of the molding of the marble.
