PAIR OF Kakiemon porcelain MOUNTED VASES Porcelain: Japan, Edo period, ca. 1700-1725 Mounting: ca. 1790 Porcelain with red, green, blue, purple and ochre decoration; gilt bronze H. 34 cm, W. 11.5 cm, D. 11.5 cm PROVENANCE Former collection of the Baroness and Baron Eugène Charles Joachim Fould-Springer, Palais abbatial de Royaumont Former collection of Nathaniel de Rothschild, Palais abbatial de Royaumont This pair of kakiemon porcelain vases decorated with birds and flowering branches is contemporary with the bottles kept in the Rijksmuseum, which can be dated to the first quarter of the eighteenth century . Our vases, which close with ormolu stoppers with geometric friezes, are mounted on a base with acanthus scrolls supported by four spinning feet. Another pair belongs to the English royal collections (fig. 2). Here, the sobriety of the mounting emphasizes the delicacy of the painted decoration and the vivacity of its colors.
