Description

Not shown-WILD HEAD Vicenza, 16th century Nembro marble H. 45 cm, W. 35 cm, D. 8 cm Our plaque, carved with a faun's head, adorned the pavement of a wealthy Italian residence, probably in the Vicenza region where Andrea Palladio built the Villa Rotonda, whose large salon is decorated with a similar disc in the center, under the eye of the dome (fig. 1). These plates allowed the ventilation of the interiors but also the evacuation of water. They exist in all shapes, some octagonal or more soberly decorated with a network of interlaces.
