ESTIENNE (Charles). L'Agriculture et la Maison rustique, in which is contained all that can be required to build a country house (...). Plus a brief compendium of hunting and falconry. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1565. In-4, vellum, title in ink on the spine (Binding of the time). Title, (8) ff, 1 blank f., 155 ff, (11) ff. of table. Rare Antwerp edition of the first encyclopedia of rural economy, published one year after the original Parisian edition by Jacques du Puys. Charles Estienne, doctor of medicine, was the son of the printer Henri Estienne and the brother of Robert Estienne. Before becoming a bookseller himself, he frequented the German and Italian embassies as tutor to Lazare Baïf's son, and became a friend of Paul Manutius in Venice. He published several treatises on agricultural and horticultural economics, including this famous Agriculture et Maison rustique in 1564. The author died in the same year that this work was first published, and it went through many editions, which were enlarged by his son-in-law Jean Liébault (around 1535-1596). "La Maison rustique" is first of all a treatise on agriculture, gardening and domestic medicine. Numerous chapters are devoted to livestock, how to make butter and cheese, poultry (hens, geese, peacocks, pheasants, thrushes, quails, pigeons), kennels, horse breeding, vegetable and ornamental gardens, medicinal plants, orchards and beekeeping. The book also contains numerous recipes for fruit preserves, wines and liqueurs, jams, oils, advice on distillation, baking, pastry-making, brewing, vine growing, wine, verjuice, vinegar, hunting, foxes, boars, falconry, etc." (Oberlé). Old handwritten bookplate on the title (illegible). Title yellowed, with small holes and stains. Mottling, stains, restorations to many leaves, wormholes. Stained vellum.
