Provenance
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia; thenceforth family property
The work is from the series of watercolours of theatre scenes which Nolde created in the winter of 1910/11 during the performances at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin after productions by Max Reinhardt. The present sheet perhaps shows a scene from Goethe’s “Faust”. Not immediately recognisable, Nolde depicts here a seated female bent forward and resting her head on her folded arms.
