French school of the 19th century Arion Bronze bas-relief with light brown patina Bears an inscription in a cartouche below the work " ARION / BAS-RELIEF DE CHEMINEE / INCENDIE DU PALAIS DE ST CLOUD / GUERRE DE 1870-71 " H : 11,6 x L : 32,4 cm This bas-relief represents the myth of the Greek poet and musician Arion. According to Herodotus, Arion is stripped of his wealth by the sailors who take him back to Corinth, forced to jump overboard dressed in his costume and playing his lyre, he is saved by a dolphin sent by the god Apollo. The inscription in the cartouche indicates that it was a bas-relief carved in the mantle of a fireplace in the palace of Saint-Cloud, destroyed in a fire during the Franco-Prussian war between 1870 and 1871.
