Fine tapestry panel in wool and silk representing the Roman general Titus (future emperor of Rome) and the Jewish princess Berenice during the Judean War. Tapestry diverted with a braid (maintenance restorations). Flanders, Brussels, middle of the XVIIth century. Height : 261 cm 261 cm - Width : 112 cm Note on the decoration : In the foreground : Titus (born on 30/12/39 in Rome and died on 13/9/81, who remained emperor for 41 years), left for Judea in 66 A.D. to contain the Jewish insurrection. He showed an impressive military mastery. He remains famous for his capture of Jerusalem in 70. At his side, the Jewish princess Berenice, who will become queen of Judea. We glimpse Berenice's father, King Herod Agrippa I, sitting on a throne. Their thwarted love will be sacrificed to the reason of State and will inspire generations of playwrights, including Racine and Corneille.
