Description

Carved oak John depicted standing, holding a chalice with a snake, wearing a cloak with very nice deep and broken folds, abundant (small restorations notably to the nose, hand and chalice reported). Brabant, attributed to Pasquier Borman or Jan II Borman, around 1520-1530. Height. 102 cm high This sculpture can be compared to the sculpture of St. John in the altarpiece of the church of St. Martin in Horrues, commissioned from Pasquier Borman in 1510. The characteristic treatment of the garment, which is also found in the Calvary of Nivelles in the Louvre (inv. RF 822), with its heavy fabric draperies, particularly deep and architectural folds, allows us to attribute the sculpture to Pasquier Borman, a member of the great Borman family, but also known in France for having participated in the altar of the Joyful Mysteries in the collegiate church of Brou.
