Description

Attributed to Alessandro Magnasco known as the Lissandrino (Genoa 1667 - Genoa 1749), Monk in Adoration of the Cross 18th century oil on canvas 25x23 cm, within antique frame This sketch depicting a monk at prayer is attributable to the well-known Genoese artist Alessandro Magnasco, known as Lissandrino. The canvas is composed of intense textural brushstrokes and darting flashes of light that give the composition the tension and dynamism that mark Magnasco's masterpieces. The work can be approached for stylistic and iconographic similarities to the painting housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam depicting Camaldolese monks praying in a hermitage (inv. no. SK-C-1358), and it is presumable that the preparatory sketch for this work may be precisely the present lot at the auction.
