Champy-Vinas), repr. p. 495. This work in patinated plaster belongs to the "Desolate" series of busts with dramatic expressions conceived in the early 1880s by the Lyon artist Jean Carriès. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Auguste Dumont, the sculptor and ceramist, who was in poverty for much of his life, always preferred the 'École de la Rue' to the École des Beaux-Arts. He thus finds his inspiration in these portraits of excluded and marginalized people whose despair, fatigue or resignation he describes with force. This first coherent set of works by the young artist was a great success with amateurs, especially in the circle of the Lyon bourgeoisie. As usual, Carriès produced several patinated plaster versions of these models. A copy of the Cook was acquired by the banker Edouard Aynard (1837-1913), a politician involved in the local public life of Lyon and a great lover of art and Carriès' works. Our copy was offered by the artist to another important businessman of Lyon, Victor Granottier, as the dedication indicates. Victor Granottier became his friend and owned a large number of works by the artist. His collection included ceramics and seven sculptures, including our Cook. There were also The Nun; Medallion of a Young Girl, called The Sister of Carriès, the Martyrdom of Saint Faithful; Frans Hals and the Statuette of French Gentleman, called The Callot.
