Description

"The Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist or the Precursor" Rectangular stained glass window in grisaille, silver yellow and sanguine. (Mt 14, 3-11). Inside a palace with Renaissance architecture, we see a soldier with a gentle face full of compassion. He is armed with a long sword and offers the head of the saint on a golden platter to Herodias, mother of Salome and wife of King Herod. Salome can be seen barefoot on the right of the soldier. The expression on the faces of the two women contrasts with that of the executioner. St. John lies on the ground; his hands are bound. In the background on the right we see two maids bringing food for Herod's banquet. There are also three other figures, a halberdier in armor and two men... Netherlands, Antwerp, ca. 1525. H : 20,3 - W : 18,7 cm Part of this composition is reminiscent of the decapitation scenes by Lucas van Leyden (1489-1533) John is put in prison for denouncing the incestuous union of Herod Antipas with his brother's wife, Herodias. Salome, daughter of Herod Philip and Herodias, abuses her uncle's weakness, and obtains from him the death of the prophet...
