Description

Wyttenbach, Johann Hugo.

Wyttenbach, Johann Hugo. Philosophische Rechtslehre oder Naturrecht. Anonymous lecture transcript. 15 numbered booklets in 1 volume. Trier, c. 1800. 670 pp. together, some separately paginated, some not paginated, and several unmarked. Regular German cursive in brown-black pen on strong, layered bluish laid paper. Somewhat later half-parchment binding with gilt-stamped spine label (this with scuff mark, parchment dusty and stained, cover somewhat rubbed). The manuscript begins with a "Preliminary Report on the Doctrine of Legislation" (so also the title on the spine). The final "Register der in meinem Manuscript über das Naturrecht verhandelten Gegenstände" notes the following: "Antritts Rede des Verfassers H. Wyttenbach". Wyttenbach (1767-1848) read on natural law at the newly established Trier Central School beginning in 1799; from 1804 to 1846 he was principal of the secondary school and the following Gymnasium. Karl Marx was strongly influenced by Wyttenbach's historical teaching in 1830-35. Wyttenbach was considered an intellectual free spirit and was even under observation by the Prussian secret police in 1837. At the same time, he was the founder of the Trier City Library and a local historian. His unprinted, extensive and exhaustive account of natural law ends with the self-confident statement: "Kant was our guide in our investigations of law, but no LOGOS EOL,no He hat es gesagt brought us away from examining it, and where we were of a different opinion, we put it forward and sought to support it with reasons". - Untrimmed, internally in very good condition. #
