Description

Hofmann, August Wilhelm von.

Hofmann, August Wilhelm von. Organic chemistry. - Inorganic Chemistry. Anonymous lecture notes in 2 volumes. With some color-inscribed formulas. Berlin, ca. 1880/90. 226, 212 mostly double-sided leaves, each with some blank leaves. Regular German cursive in black pen on smoothed paper. 21 x 16.5 cm. Black half-leather bindings of the time with gilt-stamped spine titles, both front covers with large signet of the Braunschweig Druggists' Academy in gilt (slightly rubbed). The attribution of the lectures follows the spine stamping "W. Hofmann" and a later pencil annotation on the preliminary leaves. Hofmann (1818-1892), important researcher of tar dyes, read organic and inorganic chemistry at the University of Berlin from 1865 until his death. The former is serialized, the latter in the form of 1786 questions and answers. The first volume is accompanied by a mimeographed manuscript table "Die Pflanzen-Basen oder Alkaloide" (39 p.), perhaps handed out by Hofmann to accompany lectures. The bindings suggest a lecturer trained with him at the Braunschweig Druggist Academy, founded in 1880. - Beautifully preserved.
