Letter of nobility - - Franz Joseph I of Austria. Nobility diploma from Franz Joseph I as King of Hungary for the Hungarian physician and entomologist Géza Horváth. With 1 full-page color depiction of coat of arms by Ernst Krahl and 1 color depiction of the Royal Hungarian coat of arms as a head vignette. Issued in Vienna (Bécs), July 17, 1916. 3 fol. 37.8 x 29 cm. Red leather binding with gold-stamped Royal Hungarian coat of arms on front cover and gold-stamped corner fleurons on both covers, with closing bands; the red wax seal of Franz Joseph I in brass capsule attached to tricolor cord on the diploma of nobility, in original cassette with green paper cover and inner lining (the binding minimally rubbed, the lower bands missing, brass capsule tarnished, cover of the cassette somewhat corrugated and with small missing parts, inner lining slightly soiled). Text of the document in Hungarian, partly gold heightened calligraphy in black and red, the gold borders printed. - The signature of "FerenczJózsef" imprinted, with the handwritten signature of "Báró Roszner Ervin"(Erwin Roszner von Roseneck), who was the personal minister of the King of Hungary in the cabinet of István Tisza since May 1915. - Géza von Horváth (1847-1937) studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1872. From 1880 he successfully fought the phylloxera plague on behalf of the Hungarian government, and in 1896 he became head of the zoological department at the National Museum. Horváth had been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1877, of which he was class president from 1919 to 1934. The Croatian mountain lizard "Lacerta horvathi" was named in his honor. - The vellum leaves partly minimally fingerstained, the interleaves somewhat creased, browned and with minor marginal tears. #
