HUIB HOSTE (1881-1957)

Stapelmeubelen Desk Oak and polychrome frame. Desk Eiken en polychroom voetstuk. Circa 1927. H.75,5 cm W.160 cm D.70 cm Provenance/Herkomst: Probably Billiet House in Bruges, Belgium. The architect and urban planner Huib Hoste is considered one of the most important figures of the Belgian avant-garde. During his exile in the Netherlands during the First World War, he came into contact with many aspects of modernism and joined the Amsterdam School. In contact with the de Stijl movement he became interested in rationalization, standardization and functionalism. He became a great defender of a renewed architecture and urbanism and acquired an international reputation. In 1928, he was present at the founding of the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) , an initiative of Le Corbusier. He worked on popular housing but also on public and private buildings for which he also designed the furniture.
