Louis 13 mantel. Exceptional limestone mantel from Saint-Restitut realized during the reign of Louis 14. The hood of this pure Louis 13 style mantel is adorned with a central octagonal medallion encircled by a torus of leaves and ribbons, around which are carved leather motifs, fruit falls held by ribbons and coats of arms. Masks with cherubs' heads and branches of oak leaves adorn the top and bottom of the central medallion. The cornice has a frieze with dentils. The jambs are in the image of caryatids supporting the lintel, they are also richly carved with fruit, scrolls and lions' heads. Origin : this mantel comes from the castle called "du Rocher" in Bolène (FR-84), since transformed into a hotel. But it probably comes from the castle of Grignan in the Drôme (FR-26), where the daughter of the Marquise de Sévigné lived, Françoise-Marguerite de Sévigné who married François Adhémar de Monteil de Grignan. It was during the French Revolution and more precisely in 1793, when certain architectural elements of the castle were put up for public sale, that this fireplace was removed. It was also removed during the following decades, during which the castle was abandoned by its owners before finding a new buyer... It was then reinstalled in the reception room of the Château du Rocher in Bolène (84) built in 1826 by the Count du Rocher. Dated 1652.
