BERNARD SCHULTZE (1915 Schneidemühl - 2005 Köln)

"an abstruse theater" Oil on canvas. 1990. 89.7 x 99.8 cm. Signed lower right with brush in brown "Bernard Schultze" and dated with brush in dark blue, verso with brush in brown again signed and dated and titled. Provenance: Private collection Northern Germany Literature: Bernard Schultze, exhibition catalogue Galerie Rothe, Frankfurt, 1991 (ill. p. 68) Similar to the écriture automatique propagated in Surrealism, Schultze creates pulsating color landscapes, which in their subjectivity nevertheless leave countless possibilities for association. Challenging the imagination, our furious explosion of color captivates and draws in its dynamic spell. Schultze himself describes his works as "psychograms, flickering, pushing, writhing, twisted and kneaded, fanned, crushed and gently rippled. (...) And the color flowed down the heights, formed murky milky pools in the depressions, and a dull rusty red on the lofty places, ran into the blue of a hollow and made it a dull brownish violet." (quoted from Bernard Schultze, Die Migofs 1958 bis 1973. Ölbilder, Zeichnungen, Druckgraphik, Cologne 1973, o.p.).
