Description

Kalabari altar/stool Nigeria Wood H. 30.5 cm Among the Kalabari (Ijo), stools have survived only in association with religious cults. There were stools with a carved face or mask representing the spirit of a dead person (nduen), usually the founder of a lineage. Some spirit shrines (oro) had stools as seats for the priest. See Jones GI, 1984 and Horton R., 1963, p. 51, fig. 2 for a comparable stool.
