Description

Bokyi head Nigeria Wood H. 18,5 cm This wooden head is a dance crest originally provided with a basketry that allowed it to be held on the dancer's head. The context of use and the precise provenance of this Cross River sculpture are uncertain. The Bokyi produce a type of crest composed of one or two faces, arranged side by side or in the Janus position. Scarifications characteristic of the Bokyi adorn the face. On the cheeks, two keloid lines run from the middle of the eye, one down the face, the other to the ear in a curved path. On the temples, there are scarifications in "ladder".
