Description

SIX-LEAF BYOBU SCREEN painted in polychrome on paper with a gold leaf background, depicting a country and village scene around a pond, in a hilly landscape, illustrating the rice harvest. On the right, rice fields where peasants are busy harvesting the rice panicles gathered in bunches which are then transported by horse or man, by a bridge in the foreground, to the threshing area at the edge of the village, then to the rice sieving area, where other peasants are busy. A woman carrying a baby is watching them, children playing beside her, and elderly people sheltered in thatched cottages, seem to be at the show. Further to the left, at the end of the village, are stored the rice bales. Signed at the bottom left, Sekien Toyofusa at the age of 73. (Damage and missing parts) Japan, Edo period, 19th century.
