Description

Charles Beyer (1792- ?) The Workshop of Horace Vernet. 1822. Engraved after the painting by Vernet (location unknown). 293 x 258. I.F.F. 3. Nice proof on laid paper, slightly oxidized. Interesting document abundantly captioned with the names of the artists in pencil. All margins. "The Atelier of Horace Vernet, turbulent and amusing if ever there was one, is still the most interesting, by the quantity of portraits it contains. The piston enthusiast, leaning over a table, is Eugène Lami; Amédée de Beauplan hums a romance; Horace Vernet, with his palette on his left thumb, is making arms with his pupil Lediou, a lieutenant in the line. Colonel Bro smokes a cigar with the painter Langlois; Montfort and Lehoux, in boxers, naked to the waist, warm themselves on a stove; finally, a young artist who was to make a name for himself, Robert Fleury, paints an easel canvas under the eyes of the elegant Count de Forbin."
