Description

Set of three modernist chairs, circa 1900.

Set of three modernist chairs, circa 1900. Walnut wood. Measurements: 91 x 45 x 44 cm. Set of three modernist chairs, made in walnut and dated around 1900. They have a solid structure, with a trapezoidal seat and a curved openwork back, with a sinuous profile at the bottom. The front legs are column-shaped and decorated with helicoidal grooves that run vertically along the shaft. The back legs are derived from the Empire sabre leg, which reinforces the solidity of the structure. The seat is flat, with a profile traversed by stepped mouldings and a front skirt, with a straight cutout that curves at the ends, a sober design that evokes the organic, typically modernist style. The decoration is concentrated on the back, decorated with a large thistle flower, typical of this language, of Gothic heritage, worked with naturalism, with ribs and carved profiles. This leaf seems to emerge from the frame of the backrest, curving to cover the hollow.
