The tasseled black shawl is embroidered with colorful motifs of animals, flowers, celestial objects, and phallic and yonic imagery in threads of white, red, yellow, and blue, all enclosed within narrow bands. Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. Condition: Good condition with wear, traces of use, loose threads, fraying, some tears, and minor soiling. Repairs to the centerfold. Dimensions: Size 170 x 113 cm The art of weaving remains a significant aspect of the culture and identity of the Naga people. “For the Nagas…textiles are not simply cloths but are repositories of world views, meanings, and narratives….[and] bear much of the community’s ideologies, values and beliefs in tangible form…,” writes Thingminao Horam, in Weaving Resistance and Identity: Politics of Contemporary Textile Practice of the Tangkhuls. Comprising a rectangular piece embroidered in Beijing stitch with two phoenixes amid peonies; a round badge embroidered in satin stitch with cranes and with silk lining; a square kesi woven badge with a crane and silk lining; a round kesi woven textile with flowers and silk lining; a long silk textile piece embroidered in satin stitch with floral sprays and a phoenix; and a square piece with sinuous dragons. Condition: Traces of use, some with losses, tears, loose threads, open seams, repairs, and soiling. Overall, still fair condition.
