HUGUENIN & FILS PONTS MARTEL sabonet pocket watch ref.140706 in 18kts yellow gold, late 19th century. With inscription "To the eminent tenor Julián Gayarre of the Illustrious Notarial College of Seville, 1885". White porcelain dial with Roman numerals and cobalt blue lance hands. With seconds counter at 6 o'clock. Covers with guillochée decoration and inscriptions. Ancre Ligne Droite Levees Visibles Spiral Breguet. 33 Rubis. Ponts Martel No. 140706. Manual winding movement. Total weight: 146 gr. Measures: 6 x 8 cm (total case). Julián Gayarre (Navarre, 1844-Madrid,1890) was a world famous lyric tenor, considered one of the best tenors the world of opera has ever had. He studied music at the Orfeón de Pamplona and singing in Madrid and Milan. His favourite opera, La Favorita, was premiered in 1876 at the Teatro della Scala in Milan, considered the most prestigious stage for singing. From that moment on, his fame spread until he was considered, at the time, the best tenor in the world. He sang in the best theatres in the world and premiered several operas by the greatest composers of all times, such as Wagner and Donizeti. He received numerous decorations and awards. His death in 1890 was a great shock to the world of opera, as he was at the peak of his musical career.
