Description

PALISSY (Bernard) - Œuvres - Paris, Ruault, 1777 - 1 volume In-4° - 1st collective edition of Bernard Palissy's works, with notes by Faujas de Saint-Fond and Gobet - Without the dedication to Benjamin Franklin and the portrait, Without the dedicatory epistle to Benjamin Franklin and the portrait, both of which were removed from almost all copies and are almost always missing - Bound in contemporary speckled tan basane (3 corners dulled, spotting) - Spine ribbed and ornate (1 tear at the upper head) - Red edges - A good copy in which are found the 2 founding texts of the author: De l'art de la terre, de son utilité, des émaux et du feu et le Jardin délectable, among other treatises on clay lands, stones, marl, various salts and common salt, waters and fountains, metals and alchemy, drinking gold, mitridat or theriaque, glazes, abuses and ignorances of doctors, agriculture, natural history, the fortress city, etc. In his time, Palissy was especially famous for his ceramic work with decorations of plants, fruits, small animals, appreciated among others by Catherine de Médicis, who commissioned him a grotto for the Tuileries. However, his knowledge in hydrology or agriculture seems to surpass that of the scientists of the time, so much so that Cuvier will consider his observations as the first foundations of modern geology. Censored in the 17th century, his writings were not republished until the following century. Reference : Brunet, IV, 320.
