Description

CHARCOT Jean (1867-1937) explorateur polaire.

L.A.S. "JB. Charcot", Pantelleria June 22, 1923, to his friend Raymond HOVASSE; 2 pages in-4, vignette of Why not? (ink a little pale). Their tour was to last only 4 days, but "as the characterization of this cruise since we left Provence is the gale which lasts 3 days, then 1 day of calm and again 3 days of wind we work 1 day and try to shelter us qq. part during the 3 bad ones. And it can last a long time like this. The day before yesterday we were in Lampedusa, this night we arrived in Pantellaria and here is the wind blowing again; fortunately Dangeard can go and break some stones. Besides, our tour did not lack charm, the Orient always has some, but this bad weather probably prevented it from being as fruitful as it could have been [...] On the side of the Island of Elba we sailed for five or six hours through a thick layer of velelles and the beaches of this Napoleonic island were literally covered with them"... We join a card a.s. of Hovasse to his wife written from Why not? during a cruise in Brittany...
