Description

(Gustave Mohler). Notebook of drawings, sketches (pencil, ink, wash). Notebook bound in full cloth (160 mm x 100 mm). 28 drawings, studies or sketches on various subjects (animals, characters, landscapes...). Monogram G.M on 2 studies. Arches paper (?) A bit split at the spine of the notebook, plates a bit stained. Good condition. Gustave Mohler, painter sculptor and ceramist, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris in the workshops of Léon Cogniet and Antoine Louis Barye. He moved to Nevers in 1863 and spent his entire career there as an eclectic artist. In 1870, Gustave Mohler married Marie Hélène Robelin, granddaughter of a local scholar-collector, Jacques Gallois, who donated his collection to the city of Nevers in 1847. He was a teacher, qualified as an "animal painter", at the municipal school of arts in Nevers, alongside Édouard Pail and François Moreau de Charny. Some of his works are preserved in the Nevers Museum of Fine Arts.
