BUST OF A DIGNITARY Egypt, Middle Kingdom, XIIth Dynasty (ca. XIXth c. BC) Granite H. 24 cm Provenance Former English private collection, acquired in the 1970s Sotheby's New York, December 7, 2001, lot 19 Private collection The bust carved from a block of granite would have been part of a seated statue of a dignitary. The figure wears a shoulder-length wig tucked behind large ears. His eyes are almond-shaped with hemmed lids. His arched eyebrows are modeled in slight relief, raised and descending towards the temples. His nose (missing) is broad with a visible fold of flesh on his cheeks, and his lower lip is thicker than his upper lip. The lower lip is also heavily incised. The torso is bare and the outline of the arms is well defined. His left hand is placed flat on his chest. Stylistic features such as the anatomy of the ears, the style of the wig, and the mature facial features are reminiscent of Middle Kingdom productions. A Middle-Kingdom granite bust of a dignitary.
