BUST OF A ROMAN PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL The marble head: Roman art, 1st century AD The bust in alabaster: 16th century Total height 63.5 cm; head height 27.9 cm Provenance Former French private collection, before 1980 Ex- Sotheby's New-York, June 7, 2002, lot 49, estimated $ 70 000 / 100 000 The head is carved in white marble and turned slightly to the right. The face is characterized by an oval shape, the chin is prominent with a dimple. The eyes are close together and open, the upper eyelids are heavy. The eyebrows in relief are slightly arched and bring an expressiveness to the look. The low forehead is surmounted by a head of short hair finely sculpted and framing the face but leaving the ears free. The neck is also marked by folds. The general appearance of this face exudes a certain prosperity and grandeur, typical of private portraiture of this period. The head has been set on a 16th century alabaster bust, the whole resting on a red marble pedestal. A roman marble portrait head of a man. Ca. 1st century A.D.
