BUST OF THE GOD MERCURY Roman art, 1st - 2nd century AD Bronze with green and red patina Height 15 cm Provenance Former Joseph Klein collection, New-York, established between 1941 and 1980 Then by descent French private collection, acquired on the art market Depicted with youthful features, the face is in a rounded oval. The eyes are wide open and the gaze is directed towards the sky. The arch of the eyebrows is pronounced but fine, the nose is straight. The fleshy mouth is half open. The forehead is surmounted by a hair framing the face and leaving the ears partially free. On its head, between its two wings, a feather is fixed. This appendage could represent a lotus petal. The type is inspired by the Diadumene. For a similar model but in terracotta see PERDRIZET P., Pl. LXII, "Les terrescuites grecques d'Egypte de la collection Fouquet", 1921.
