HERM OF PAPPOSILENE Roman art, 1st-2nd century AD Marble "giallo antico H. 17,8 cm Provenance Former Bruce Rogers collection, San Francisco, California, USA, 1971 Christie's, New York, Arbiters of Style, October 8, 2013, lot 81 European private collection The head was carved from a block of "giallo antico" marble. It reproduces a bearded male head with a wrathful expression: the ivy garland on his forehead allows us to identify him with Papposilenus, the old satyr who played the role of adoptive father for the young Dionysus/Bacchus. Complete and in good condition, but recollated from many fragments, some fragments are lost. A roman giallo antico herm of Papposilenus. The head was carved from a block of "giallo antico" marble.
