PLASTIC ASKOS OF THE CANOSA TYPE Magna Graecia, Canosa workshop, 4th-3rd century B.C. Terracotta with traces of engobes and pigments Restorations. Misses and accidents at the level of the statuettes H. approx. 60 cm Provenance Former private collection, 1910-1920, then by descent Private collection, 1980 This large askos has a globular body and rests on a rounded base. The handle is wide and the neck is tubular with a flat flared lip. On the front of the body, a young ephebe's head is modeled. The hair is anastolated and composed of wavy strands. The face is characterized by youthful and soft features. On the handle and on each side of the neck, a discoidal base supports a draped female statuette. The hands are raised to the sky. Each one carries a chiton. For similar models see those in the Louvre Museum, inv. B 491, inv. CA 3241. A Canosan terracotta plastic askos. The large spherical body on a rounded base, with a wide strap handle and a cylindrical spout, the rim flaring, a mold-made facing head of a youth applied to the body below the spout and on the opposite end, a Canosan draped lady, with chiton and arms upraised preserving extensive engobe. Ca. 4th-3rd century B.C.
