GNOSTIC INTAGLIO Roman art, 2nd century. Elliptical shape, representing on one side the demon-god Chnoubis (a lion-headed serpent) with a head crowned with a solar disk and provided with seven rays. The other side shows a monster with an eagle's head, a human body, and the double tail of a snake; it is armed with a whip and a shield. Numerous Greek letters surround the two figures. A roman gnostic amethyst intaglio engraved on both faces. One with the god Chnoubis, lion-headed snake with a radiated crown. The reverse, with a syncretic figure, eagle-headed, human body, double snake tail, armed with whip and shield. In the field on both sides, Greek letters. Beautiful conservation.
