IMPORTANT NECKLACE Byzantine art, 6th-7th century. Gold, the chain composed of interlaced medallions. The central pendant, in solid gold in the form of a cross and set at the intersection of the transepts of a beautiful garnet cabochon. On either side, a series of pendants in the form of mandorles and cylindrical hollow beads with two medallions depicting the Virgin and Child. Very good condition. L. 86 cm; Dim. (cross). 45 x 59 mm ; Diam. (medallions) 19 mm; L (mandorla) 29 mm 49,3 g. Accompanied by an expertise of Dr. Jack Ogden, dated July 2021. Provenance Former private collection, acquired in Germany, 1961. An important byzantine gold necklace with a central cross pendant in massive gold and set with a garnet cabochon bead. The hoop in hoop chain is composed of 4 barrel sided shaped bead, 2 gold medallions with Virgin and Child and 2 gold mandorles shaped pendants. Accompanied with an expertise of Dr. Jack Ogden, from July 2021. Beautiful state of conservation. Ca. 6th - 7th century A.D.
