A HAND-COLORED WOODBLOCK PRINT DEPICTING XUANZANG

A HAND-COLORED WOODBLOCK PRINT DEPICTING XUANZANG Japan, 19th century Painted with ink and watercolors on paper, laid down on fabric-coated cardboard. Depicting the famous 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang (Genjo) on his pilgrimage to India, carrying a large bamboo oi (traveling monk’s backpack) filled with sutra scrolls, holding another sutra scroll in one hand and a hossu (flywhisk) in the other, wearing colorful, long flowing robes. SIZE 35.8 x 15.5 cm (image) and 46 x 26.8 cm (incl. mounting) Condition: Good condition with old wear, minor losses, some soiling. Provenance: From an English private collection, acquired in Australia about 10 years ago. Literature comparison: The original painting of Xuanzang, dated to the Kamakura period, 14th century, is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum.
