A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN KANGXI REVIVAL ‘SQUIRREL AND GRAPE’ BOWL

A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN KANGXI REVIVAL ‘SQUIRREL AND GRAPE’ BOWL China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). With deep rounded sides rising from a short foot to a slightly everted rim, densely decorated around the exterior in underglaze cobalt blue with seven squirrels frolicking amongst fruiting vines. The interior well decorated with a squirrel on a grapevine bush within a double line. The underside with an apocryphal six-character Kangxi reign mark within a double circle. The motif of ‘Squirrel and Grapes’ carries an auspicious meaning and brings the wish for a long life as well as having many offspring. Condition: Excellent condition with minor firing imperfections. Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. This lot was acquired by a second-generation member of the Holzapfel family and has remained in the family ever since.
