A GROUP OF THREE WOOD NETSUKE OF HOTEI AND KARAKO Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The first depicting a contented karako clutching and grabbing Hotei’s treasure bag with both hands. The second with Hotei seated in voluminous robes revealing his bulging stomach and chest, holding a rosary and a drumstick, using his belly as a drum, a karako at his side, the underside signed. The third another depiction of Hotei with karako, this time it is the karako who uses Hotei’s mouth as a drum - note Hotei’s discontent expression. HEIGHT 3 – 4.5 cm Condition: The first with a crack and the second with a chip to the drumstick, otherwise good worn condition. Provenance: German private collection.
