China, 19th century. Of cylindrical shape, decorated in underglaze blue with a boy on a water buffalo under a pine tree. The stopper made of red colored glass imitating coral on a turquoise platelet, the lower platelet and spoon of metal.
A boy and water buffalo is a popular motif in Chinese art and has significance in the Chan Buddhist tradition, where the image represents the practitioner's progression in their practice.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, two thin hairlines to the body and few notches to underside.
Provenance: Hungarian private collection, according to the current owner acquired around 1970.
