A BRONZE ‘BIXIE’ WEIGHT

A BRONZE ‘BIXIE’ WEIGHT China, in the style of the Han Dynasty, but dating to around 1900. Cast as a ferocious winged beast standing foursquare in a threatening posture with head raised and mouth open in a roar, the long trailing horn terminating in a ruyi emblem. The chimera further with a trifurcated tail and elegantly curved wings rising from the front haunches. Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Gentleman in the United Kingdom, acquired by the owner’s father and thence by descent. Condition: Overall in good condition. Significant wear, weathering, and corrosion. Extensive malachite encrustations and areas of cuprite. Some dents, nicks and losses. Possibly minor old touchups and remnants of varnish.
