[Charles CAGNIARD DE LATOUR (1777-1859) engineer and physicist.] Manuscrit, Œuvres complètes, observations, découvertes et inventions..., [1872]; one vol. in-4, cherry half-basin (period binding; small accident to one corner). Precious collection of this inventor's works, with a biographical note. The title of the collection is: Œuvres complètes, observations, découvertes et inventions de Mr. le baron Cagnard [sic] de La Tour [...] précédées d'une notice biographique et ornées de son portrait. This collection is all the more important in that, apart from a few memoirs published in scientific periodicals (notably the Compte rendus de l'Académie des sciences), which were the subject of rare offprints, there is no printed treatise by the author.A physicist and engineer from the first graduating class of the École Polytechnique (Year III), Cagniard de Latour later joined the corps of engineer-geographers, became a second-class auditor at the Conseil d'État (1810) and was assigned to the administration of powders in 1811. First-class auditor to the Minister of the Interior in 1812 and 1813, he also became auditor to the Petitions Commission in 1813. But he soon left these civil servant activities to devote himself entirely to his research in fields as diverse as mechanics, chemistry, physics and acoustics. It was in the latter field that he made his name: seeking to produce a standard for pitch based on a given frequency, in 1819 he perfected the Cagniard-Latour siren: by controlling the speed of rotation, this instrument can produce a sound with a calculable and adjustable frequency. It was he who gave the name "siren" to this device, which has since been used universally, in reference to the sirens of Greek mythology. He later used the device to study the propagation of sound in liquids. The set presented here was composed after the Baron's death, to bring together his main research and inventions. The manuscript is written in neat, regular handwriting on the front pages. It is in two parts: I. Illustrations of work. Notice sur la vie, les travaux, les découvertes et les inventions de Monsieur le baron Cagnard de Latour (33ff.), biographical note. - II. Baron Cagnard de Latour, member of the Académie des Sciences. His life, his works, his discoveries (428ff.). This part presents the Baron's inventions and studies, including the famous siren. Almost everything is written in the third person: this is an analytical memoir based on his work. At the end, however, we have reproduced the few printed memoirs mentioned at the start of this entry: - Mémoire sur un végétal conservoïde d'une nouvelle espèce. Extract from a paper presented to the Académie des Sciences on May 11, 1835 (and published in Annales des sciences naturelles, July 1835, ff. 371-382). - Report on observations and experiments made on the cause and effects of wine fermentation. Extrait des comptes-rendus des séances de l'Académie des sciences, July 23, 1838 (ff. 418-426).However, no portrait appears in our copy, despite the title announcement; similarly, the plate illustrating the first memoir in the printed version has not been reproduced.Baron du Charmel's copy (bookplate): this was Oscar de Bonnefoy du Charmel (1813-1898), Cagniard's son-in-law (he married his only daughter Philippine, 1824-1886). It was he who undoubtedly collected all his father-in-law's writings.
