Charles Philipon (1806-1862) - Dedicated to the cobblestones of Paris by their brothers in arms. Circa 1830. 41.2x30cm. Original poster or print, lithograph, not canvas-backed. Condition A- tears. In a different composition, these subjects appeared in the newspaper La Caricature. This document may have been a bonus for the newspaper. It probably refers to the 3 Glorieuses Revolution of 1830. A scythe, a broom, a lantern, a clister and a nightcap are allegories to help readers understand the purpose of the work. Let's not forget that the ordinances of 1830 sought to suppress freedom of the press, which provoked an uprising armed with the cobblestones of Paris. At the time, only the Gazette de France and the Journal des Débats were authorized.

Albert CAMUS (1913-1960). Autograph manuscript, [La révolution travestie]; 2pages in-4 in his tiny handwriting, with numerous erasures and corrections (typescript attached). First draft manuscript of a chapter from Actuelles I, with variants. "Since August 1944, everyone here has been talking about revolution - and always sincerely, there's no doubt about it. But sincerity is not a virtue in itself. There are confused sincerities that are worse than lies. It's not a question of speaking without ulterior motives, but only of thinking clearly. Ideally, revolution is a change in political and economic institutions that will bring greater justice and freedom to the world. In practice, it is the often unfortunate combination of historical events that will bring about this happy change. [...] The idea of seizing power by violence is a romantic one, but the progress of armaments has rendered it illusory. A government's repressive apparatus has all the strength of tanks and planes. Tanks and planes are all that's needed to balance it out. 1789 and 1917 are still dates, but they are no longer examples". Any left-wing revolution would be crushed by the Americans, and any right-wing revolution by the Russians: "We are not free to be revolutionaries. [...] we can only speak of international revolution. [...] Today, the notion of revolution has been replaced by the notion of ideological war. [...] After reflecting a little on this question, it seems to me that men who wish to change the world effectively today have to choose between mass graves, the impossible dream of history suddenly coming to a halt, and the acceptance of a relative utopia that gives both action and the world a chance"...

Paris, Ladvocat. 1825. 10 volumes in-8, contemporary 1/2 tan basane. A good copy of the original edition, free of foxing. Lithographed portrait in Volume I, after a drawing by Devéria. The memoirs of Madame de Genlis, educator, novelist, playwright and memorialist, cover the end of the reign of Louis XV, the reign of Louis XVI, the Revolution (and emigration from 1792 to 1797), the Consulate, the Empire and the Restoration. The second part of volume X (pages 241 to 400) is a "Dictionnaire critique et raisonné des étiquettes de la Cour, des moeurs et des usages du monde." Handwritten bookplate "Château d'Esternay".

Heinrich Hoff. 1848. 1 volume in-12, late 19th century white half vellum with corners, smooth mute spine, title in gilt letters at top of first cover. 16 pp. Rare first German edition of the famous Valentino Hall speech, delivered in Paris by the Russian revolutionary Bakunin on the anniversary of the Polish Revolution of 1830-32. The next day, the Russian ambassador demanded the troublemaker's expulsion, and Bakunin had to return to Brussels. Minor brown spots.
