Description

Beautiful chest of drawers in marquetry of musical instruments, the front opening to five drawers, the top of violet breccia marble (repaired) resting on rounded uprights ended by small cambered feet; (total closure of the chest of drawers with a single lock, the system to be restored; restorations, the frame of the drawers probably rebuilt at a later date) Attributed to the entourage of Jean-François Oeben. Louis XV period, circa 1765-1770. 87 cm H : 87 cm, W : 127 cm, D : 54 cm This chest of drawers is an exact copy of the Jean-François Oeben model, the first version of which corresponds to the famous mahogany "à la grecque" chests of drawers delivered for Madame de Pompadour in the early 1760s . The side doors were abandoned to make way for drawers running the full width of the cabinet. Oeben's invention was widely used later, with notable variations, but here it is respected in detail, allowing this chest of drawers to be dated quite early (the 1760s), that is to say well before the model was distributed in a simplified form by several cabinetmakers such as De Loose, Dautriche, Ohneberg and many others. They often lose the characteristics of the original model, such as a relatively wide gauge, three drawers above strictly separated from the other two by a very marked moulding, the double central projection and above all the absence of an apron reinforcing the line of the furniture. These elements, to which we can add the locking system that allows all the drawers of the chest to be closed with a turn of the key, are all arguments for attributing this chest to the direct entourage of Oeben. As he himself disappeared in 1763, it is very likely that this piece of furniture was made by a cabinetmaker of his direct circle; in this respect, the names of Leleu, Riesener or RVLC should be mentioned.
