It dates from 1827 and was given by Ary Scheffer to his friend Henri de Latouche, a writer, who published in 1827 an epistolary novel against the Jesuits, Correspondance de Clément XIV et Carlo Bertinazzi. Scheffer was inspired by it and created four paintings on this subject, engraved by Jazet and given to his friend.
