It is based on the composition by Prud'hon signed and dated 1793 (Oval canvas, 60 x 50 cm) acquired from the Georges Wildenstein gallery by the Musée National des Beaux-Arts d'Alger (see J. Guiffrey, L'œuvre de P.-P. Prud'hon, Paris, 1924, no. 518).
