Attributed to Victor LOUIS (Paris 1731-1800) Cup on the stage of a theatre, presumed project for the theatre of Bordeaux Pen and ink, watercolor. 20 x 24.5 cm Annotated on the back architect of the Palais Royal galleries and the Bordeaux theatre. Victor Louis was called to Bordeaux by the Maréchal de Richelieu to build a grandiose edifice, in keeping with his appetite for comedians. He He presented his first projects in 1773, but the building was not completed until 1780. Charles Garnier, a great admirer, imitated the Great Staircase in his Paris opera house. The huge building was conceived as a commercial centre, capable of housing "a café and shops along the peristyle, a concert hall, a guardhouse, a (see Jacques Sargos, Bordeaux vu par les peintres, Bordeaux 2006, ed. L'horizon chimérique, p. 122). The Duke of Orleans, who came to Bordeaux in 1776 to inaugurate the laying of the first stone, was seduced by this modern principle. He then entrusted Victor Louis with the renovation of the galleries adjoining the Palais-Royal and the construction of the Richelieu Room.
