BUST OF A SAINT BISHOP Italy, Venice, Xth century Marble 66 x 66 x 33 cm This bust sculpted in marble shows a middle-aged man man of mature age, presented from the front and of imposing stature. His face is characterized by vigorous and serious features. He wears a moustache and a full beard made up of curly curly locks. The very solemn expression is made realistic by the presence of forehead wrinkles forehead and eyelids. Dressed in a fine brocatelle gown, with a rounded flared collar - has been treated with meticulousness and softness, where the arabesques of the decoration under the perfectly legible folds. The right arm bent and raised hand in a sign of blessing, while his right hand holds the his right hand holds the book of the Holy Scriptures. It is probably a representation of Saint Peter. The precise modelling with clear contours of our bust testifies to the the evolution of forms that took place at the end of the 15th century in the in northern Italian sculpture under the impetus of Antonio Rossellino. A balance between naturalism and idealization combined with with elements of technical virtuosity reminiscent of certain sculptures of Benedetto da Maiano and in particular the bust of Pietro Mellini (fig.1).
