Description

ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822), Workshop of Bust of Paris, circa 1807 Plaster Bearing an illegible number on the underside of the pedestal Height: 70 cm This plaster bust is probably taken from the casts used to create the full-length figure of Paris in the Correr Museum in Venice. The last plaster figure was used by Canova to create the marble version commissioned by Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) and executed between 1807 and 1812. The marble later passed into the collection of Alexander I of Russia and is now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (see G. Pavanello, L'opera completa del Canova, Milan, 1976, nos. 205-207). WORKSHOP OF ANTONIO CANOVA (POSSAGNO 1757 - 1822 VENICE) Paris, CIRCA 1807 Plaster bust; on an integrally cast circular socle with indistinct cypher just below the truncation H. 70 cm This plaster bust is almost certainly taken from the moulds used to create the full length figure of Paris in the Correr Museum, Venice. The latter plaster figure was used by Canova to create the marble version commissioned by Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) and executed between 1807 and 1812. The marble later passed into the collection of Alexander I of Russia and is today in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see G. Pavanello, L'opera completa del Canova, Milan, 1976, nos. 205-207).
