BUST OF ATHENA PALLAS OF THE VELLETRI TYPE Late 18th - early 19th century Sculpture in white marble Height : 94 cm Note Inspired by the statue of Athena helmeted known as "Pallas of Velletri" from the 1st century and discovered at the end of the 18th century, Musée du Louvre, inv. Ma 464. The goddess of war is depicted with her head slightly tilted forward, looking down, which suggests that this bust was probably positioned high up in a niche. Her hair is made up of long wavy strands tied back and is topped by the Corinthian helmet. On the top of the helmet, and on the neckline of her dress, snakes are waving.
