Description

An Orientalist carpet based on Coptic fabric patterns or Roman mosaics, Morocco for the European market or France A rare carpet belonging to a small group of carpets made probably in France after drawing of Roman mosaics, probably made in Morocco The design consists of a central motif of an eight-pointed star, a diamond superimposed on a square, and four square motifs decorated with a network of red-orange geometric lines, all of which stand out against a black background and have a certain decorative power. This carpet was most probably made by an identifiable workshop, but we have not been able to locate it. We know that a designer (cartonnier) made a special series in connection with the rediscovery of Coptic textiles and mosaics in the early 20th century. Good general condition. Minor wear. Early 20th century 308 x 210 cm
