Ceremonial spear top, Admiralty Islands, Bismark Archipelago, Papua New Guinea Wood, fiber, pigments H. 38, 5 cm Ceremonial top staff, Papua New Guinea H. 15 3/16 in Provenance: - Galerie Valluet-Ferrandin The figure at the top of this ceremonial spear from the Admiralty Islands adopts the traditional posture of the region, standing with legs slightly bent and arms clasped along the body, which is entirely tinted with red ochre. The face is classic, enhanced by tattoos painted with kaolin and topped by a sheath used to insert an obsidian blade.
